The Fairways of Prince William Welcome You

Take a cart if you wish, but Prince William Golf Course offers a great course to play and to walk. There are some ups and downs along the way, but the knolls are gentle and the lies are rarely tricky. Approximately 85 percent of the fairways could be called wide open and generous.

Even from the back tees, this course is fair and playable, and better players can score well by playing from there. But plenty of holes can provide excitement and adventure for players with more skills. And the course is certainly challenging for golfers with beginner to intermediate skills.

One of the holes with some excitement to it on the front nine is No. 6, a very short par-3, 148 yards from the back and 101 from the front tees. It's a shortie that can stump you sometimes.

You're going a little downhill to a medium-sized green.  A bunker protects the entire front of the green. It's a pretty good hole even though it's fairly short.

The 9th hole is a par-4 for men and a par-5 for women, playing at 405 yards from the back and 336 from the forward tees. You'll need a downhill tee shot, according to Behringer. Then you'll contend with a small creek running across the fairway.  After that there's more trouble ahead.

It's a difficult hole because the approach is all uphill.  The green slopes from back to front with a bunker protecting the right side of the green. This is a tough hole even for better players.

The 11th is an interesting par-3 measuring 242 yards from the back tees and 179 from the front. The green is sloped from back to front and right to left. You have to carry a large, wide creek to get to the green. The creek is really in play, especially from the back tees.

A lot of players worry about making it to the green due to the water and decide to lay up in front of the creek instead.

Then it's on to No. 12, the longest hole (565 yards from the back and 425 from the forward tees).

From the tee box all the way down the right hand side is out of bounds because we have homes on that side.  It's a big, big hole, a slight dogleg left to an elevated green with a bunker on the right front of the green.

The 12th can be very difficult even allotting three shots to the green, in fact. Your second shot will be slightly uphill. There's about a 10- to 12-foot elevation change.

The 18th is a 385-yard par-4 (305 yards from the forward tees) that will test your nerve and leave you with a sense of accomplishment. It's a picturesque spot where you can see ponds and lakes as you eye the tree-lined fairway. It's particularly dramatic in the fall when leaves are ablaze with red and gold.

Two large ponds are in play here and you have to carry them to get to the fairway.  That water attracts a lot of balls. But cosmetically it's a really pleasing hole. It looks wide open, but it's really not. You get a warm and fuzzy feeling until you take your shot.

But there's a big green on the finishing hole that is user friendly. It has bunkers on either side, however.

Then it's on to the clubhouse to sip a cool beverage and talk over your round with friends.
